From 1868 to 1970, the historic Isaac Ludwig Mill at the Maumee River and Erie Canal near Toledo, Ohio, was an operational saw and grist mill, powered exclusively by water turbines (although a backup steam engine added in 1900 provided power during flood conditions). Today, the mill has been restored to its original condition and is a prominent attraction inside the Providence Metropark. Visitors can see demonstrations of the mill’s equipment, buy mill-ground flour and cornmeal, and see the mill’s powerful saw. The Cathedral of Arequipa, Peru illustrates the natural setting of Peru along the world’s “Ring of Fire,” the belt around the Pacific Ocean known for its high frequency of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Peru, affected by the Nazca Plate under the Pacific Ocean subjecting beneath the South American plate, lies in an active volcanic zone and experiences frequent earthquakes.
